I greatly appreciated the Collected Works edition of Flannery O'Connor's writings. O'Connor is a one-of-a-kind master storyteller. I assume most people considering this volume are already somewhat familiar with her work, particularly her short stories A Good Man is Hard to Find and Good Country People, and perhaps her novel Wise Blood. There is, of course, more, and it is all well-worth reading, but I'll not here review any of her novels, short stories, or other writings. My comments are more addressed to the edition itself.

The stories are not presented in the temporal order in which she wrote them. Allowing for that, though, not only did the volume allow me to see the progression in her writing style and skill, but it allowed me to see how she reworked some of her earlier stories into her later ones and also to see how she revisits and reuses ideas and settings.

The Notes are sparse but helpful. They are near the end of the volume and do not interrupt the text. The Chronology is a brief outline of her life which can help place her writings in context. The ribbon that allows the reader to mark progress in the book is a very nice touch, eliminating the need for a bookmark. There is no Introduction to the volume.

Flannery O'Connor Collected Works Wise Blood / A Good Man Is Hard to Find / The Violent Bear It Away / Everything that Rises Must Converge / Essays Letters Library of America Flannery O'Connor 9780940450370 Books Reviews

Never read Flannery O'Connor till now. My bad. I love the grisly or so called Southern "Grotesqueness" of the characters and the language. Every American should read this. The short Stories are exact pictures of a moment and a situation recalled and retold in painful accuracy. Wise Blood is wonderful. Start there and read till you come to the back cover.
Another aspect of my enjoyments is the quality of the book itself. Nicely bound and a well made book built for the ages. Similar in some respects to the stories it contains.
Shelf any misgivings on her viewpoints. O'Connor's greatest gift is in building a compelling and interesting character that's entertaining even though we may never truly admire the character. This is no small feat. It requires a rare skill that so few writers have, and O' Connor, as evidenced by her writing, had worked amazingly hard in mastering this technique.

There are many reasons to read her work, but to me this is her stand out achievement that firmly places her in the pantheon of great short story writing.

Worth a read by any aspiring writer, or anyone interested in seeing a well drawn character meet a bit of O' Connor justice.

Enjoy!
O'Connor's work is unique in my experience. She conveys events and people who trigger existential questioning of who we are as human beings, what we do and why. Her characters are well drawn, demanding of one's attention and frequenty frightening; not in any "spooky" way but in a way that makes the reader question human relationships and motivation. I have actually found it necessry to read her in small doses, so to speak, because it takes a while to process individuals in one work before going on to another. It's too bad O'Connor passed away so young.
"where you come from is gone.
where you thought you were going weren't never there
and where you are ain't no good less you can get away from it"
takes you fully to a time and a place that are gone
O'Connor did not publish much compared to some authors; but she published quality writing. Her work is still relevant and intriguing. It will entertain on a visceral level while working against psychological preconceptions and stereotypes. There is not a bad or mediocre story in her oeuvre. This book is worth purchasing. It is not that every story needs the others, but that every story is worth reading. They will, however, affect readers in unwelcome ways. They do not count as "beach reading" the way Graham Greene's might.

Of interest is PJ Harvey's musical take on the story "Good Country People" (the song "Joy") as an example of O'Connor's wide range of affect.
O'Connor is a marvelous writer. She speaks to being Catholic in the South in mid 20th century, useing many varied religious themes, the race issue is addressed constantly in ways that make one aware of our many hidden, even from ourselves, prejudices. Her descriptions are beyond compare!

This book is the full collection of O'Connor's works. Wonderful wafer thin pages, strong binding, introduction, letters, etc. I highly recommend it.
I, first was introduced to the author in college, and immediately ordered her book, that was fifty years ago and she remains my all time favorite writer. I read several books each month and have a daughter in college who shares my love for reading. She wanted to read additional stories written by O'Connor but my copy was badly worn so I opted to repurchase her works. My book is used but in remarkable shape and once again we can enjoy her works. If a person enjoys southern antebellum writers and haven't experienced O'Connor I would encourage you to try her epic tales.
