I love this author's stories but I hesitated over this one. I'm a mom who disliked seeing her son get flung about in collisions on the football field while watching helplessly from the bleachers. The game itself has zero interest for me. But I knew that Charles Martin has the gift of making the ordinary memorable, and telling stories painfully dug out of deep places of suffering, and I thought, why don't I give it a go? So I did.

The story really isn't about football--thought at one point I wondered how long it had taken the author to do enough research to get the locker room immediacy that is evident on every page (in the author's note you discover that he played--okay, that explains that). This story is about a broken man who learns that you can't fight hate and anger with hate and anger. It's a powerful message that goes way beyond the football field.

Yes, maybe some of the things are over the top or even a tad unrealistic. But that's fiction for you. Both the hero and villain are larger-than-life. But the true story has to do with what the protagonist learned: there are worse imprisonments than prison.

One of the things I love most about Martin’s books are the characters that strike me as someone I already know. He has this uncanny ability to give me such connection with them that it just seems I’ve met each one somewhere before. He does not let me down in his most recent story. I don’t know a lot about football, even less about prison and I’ve rarely spent even a day away from my husband but still I connect with these characters. A dream almost grasped, a pain almost unbearable, loss that cannot be restored - these are emotions I can fathom and they weave a story I want to see to the end.
Martins stories always have a satisfactory ending, even when it seems “this one can’t possibly.” Again as I read, feelings mounted over the great injustice that could not possibly be resolved and my mind swelled with, “I can’t imagine how this can end well.” And again, the twists and turns of his imagined reality carried me to a conclusion that left me satisfied, a little emotionally exhausted and filled with hope. The best book is one that leaves me wanting to know what happened next. At the end of this book, I want to see these characters grow old and live life after the fact.
Martin seems to be pulling away from the spiritual themes that I remember being more prominent, but never forced, trite or mundane in his earlier books. I hope that I am wrong about this turn in his writing and that in future work his characters aren’t rescued by just romantic love and hope in people but in the Author of Truth. I read several of his books before I figured out I was reading romance because of the subtlety of love being wrapped up in something so much bigger than him and her or parent and kid or brother or friend. I miss the gentle but unmistakable weaving of the Truth of Love into the healing, redeeming, restoring endings. This is not to say the same general flavor is not present in this story, just that it is not poignant as in his earlier stories. I imagine this change has to do with which section of the bookstore I find him in. I just hope that my favorite author does not move into worlds I’m no longer interested in discovering with him.
If you have read and enjoyed Charles Martin before, you will be pleased and satisfied with your purchase once again. If you have not read him before, you will be pleased to dive in and read what will soon become labeled as the first of all his books you have read.
I am a devoted Charles Martin fan! have been since he wrote " When the Crickets Cry" , my favorite book about beloved Rabun County, GA characters. I have read all of Mr. Martin's published books. I have spent years recommending his books to family, co-workers and friends. I gave these special people one of my best gifts. I gave my son who is also a new fan to Charles Martin a hard copy of all of his previous books for his birthday. I shall give my son, " A life intercepted", as a Christmas gift.
" A Life Intercepted', is so..ooo ..good! I was not ready for the story to end..... because I wanted to know more about the continuing life of these two memorable characters and their devoted friends .. Friends who gave up success, many years of love and popularity because a hurt, rejected girl could not have what she coveted. There are many life lessons in this book on the gift of forgiveness and repentance. A stellar example of how to reinvent a God given talent by teaching another person what you have been given.
Charles Martin has been given a remarkable gift to tell a story and to tell it well. My tip before you start reading this book is to find a day that does not contain any plans so you will be able to keep reading. I could not leave this book with our finishing it!
