Defending Angels A Beaufort Company Mystery Mary Stanton Books
Most paranormal mysteries that I've read involve a character who either has unusual powers (a psychic, for instance) or is uncanny (a witch, a ghost). Brianna Winston-Beaufort, generally known as Bree, is neither; she's just a young lawyer finally flying the nest after working several years for her daddy's firm. She's inherited a great-uncle's client list, and while his old office in Savannah, Ga. (called "America's most haunted city") is being renovated, she sets out in search of a temporary headquarters. The one she finds is plump in the middle of the city's only murderers-only cemetery, but the price is right and the landlady, Lavinia Mather (it's only till about halfway into the book that we find out she's black) friendly. Then the weird things start happening. Bree finds a starving dog in a trap--in the cemetery; now who would set a trap in a cemetery? A rather repulsive painting keeps coming back like a song--and then coming to life, if you could call it life. People seem to be unable to find Bree's new address, and Bree herself manifests an ability to call up a devastating wind out of nowhere at all, without really knowing how she does it. A phone call requesting legal assistance turns out to have been placed by a notoriously contentious and Howard-Hughes-ish billionaire who drowned before it was placed. The PI Bree hires to dig out facts pops up at unexpected moments with powers that don't seem quite real--or mortal. Eventually Bree discovers certain startling truths about her ancestry and learns that not only the PI, but her paralegal, her secretary, her landlady, *and* her dog are all literally "angels in disguise"--and she is their destined leader. This is a really unique and fascinating turn on mysteries and unlike anything I've found to date. There are a few scary bits, but nothing too gruesome, and even non-Christians can find it enjoyable and plausible. And certain questions remain unresolved (just what *is* the story about that painting, and why is the ghost of Josiah Pendergast apparently poking its ectoplasmic nose into Bree's life?), leaving the door open for more volumes. A definite standout among recent mysteries.Tags : Amazon.com: Defending Angels (A Beaufort & Company Mystery) (9780425224984): Mary Stanton: Books,Mary Stanton,Defending Angels (A Beaufort & Company Mystery),Berkley,0425224988,Mystery & Detective - General,Mystery fiction.,Crime & mystery,FICTION Mystery & Detective General,FICTION Mystery & Detective Women Sleuths,Fiction,Fiction - Mystery Detective,General Adult,MASS MARKET,MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE FICTION,Mystery & Detective - Women Sleuths,MysterySuspense,United States, mystery;mystery books;murder mystery books;detective novels;crime books;police;mystery and thrillers;mystery and suspense;mystery novels;fiction;novels;mysteries;fiction books;mysteries and thrillers;books fiction;books mystery;mystery thriller suspense;paranormal;ghosts;cozy mystery;paranormal mystery;fantasy;supernatural;urban fantasy;romance;vampires;cats;cozy;witches;magic;crime;animals;paranormal romance;women sleuths;thrillers;murder mystery;chick lit;psychic;mystery series;vampire, supernatural; ghosts; cozy mystery; urban fantasy; vampires; mystery books; murder; paranormal mystery; suspense; crime; crime books; thrillers; thriller; psychic; cozy; detective novels; detective; magic; women sleuths; demons; witches; mystery; mystery thriller suspense; murder mystery books; mystery and thrillers; mystery novels; mystery and suspense; fiction; mysteries; fiction books; mysteries and thrillers; cats; animals; murder mystery; mystery series; halloween; charlaine harris; crime fiction; adventure; book series
Defending Angels A Beaufort Company Mystery Mary Stanton Books Reviews
I enjoyed this book very much. The characters are interesting. The concept of the story line is fascinating. It sure makes you think.
I ejoyed this book so much and could not put it down. I loved the descriptions of the South and it's colorful People. After reading most of the reviews, I just had to say how much I enjoyed reading this. I will definately look for more of the author's novels.
Most of the books of this genre I have read lately seem devoted to bickering between either family members or friends. This book avoided that and dealt infomatively with the subject matter. I will be looking forward to purchasing all of this author's output. It is delightful to find a book that can quote Milton, etc., and also spin a fine story.
This series is a favorite of mine because it's concept is unique that has been beautifully constructed by a doubtless very gifted writter.
Fans of the supernatural will love it as much as I did, I'm pretty sure of it. The fact that the we don't get actually a courtroom scene, which would be a greatly addition to the plot - and I was kind of expecting it - has been a bit of a let-down, but not enough to even consider giving the book - and the whole series - less than five stars!!
I have a voracious appetite for books and am constantly trying new authors as I run through the authors books that appeal to me.
I get lucky about one in three or four. I won't comment on the story itself as others have already done that done that, instead I will talk about my very simple criteria for buying all of an authors books.
1. Well written, 2. it holds my interest, 3. the characters are interesting and likable, those 3 critereia gets it a four star, add 4. I don't want to put it down and am still hungry for more when I am finished, that gets it 5 stars. This author gets all 5 stars and based on reading just the first several chapters Defending Angels, I went ahead and ordered the next two in the series.
I finished it only because I wanted to say I did read both June books before June got here and I could start my June challenge.
The book was not my cup of tea therefore I only gave it a three star rating. Bree is a young lawyer who inherits her uncle's law firm in Georgia.
She soon finds out she will be defending Angels! Not something I could actually buy into. I could not wrap my head around some of the things that happened to her.
If it were not a book for the month's reading I would have put it down and started something else.
Now on to my challenge!
A nice, quick story that includes ghosts and angels. The main story involves a young lawyer in Savannah, Georgia, who gets involved in a murder investigation based on a tip from the ghost of the person killed, even though the official cause of death is ruled accidental.
Bree, the young lawyer, sets up her office in the middle of a cemetery for executed criminals, and winds up hiring a staff that, unbeknownst to her, are all angels.
The story concludes with Bree defending her ghost client in a celestial court on the charge of greed; however, we do not get a depiction of the actual proceedings in the celestial court.
In short, a nice beginning to the series, and I will be reading at least the next book.
